In 17th-century Venice, the Miotti family spent generations trying to turn glass into gold. They never succeeded. But what they did create—by accident—was something far more beautiful.

They infused molten glass with copper particles, and instead of gold, they got a deep blue stone that sparkles like the night sky. They called it "goldstone" anyway. Because anything that shines this bright, they figured, must be gold.
Four centuries later, we're still making it the same way. Still infusing glass with copper. Still watching it catch the light like stars trapped in stone.
It's not natural. But neither are fireworks. Neither are stained glass windows. Neither is most of what makes life beautiful.
